SELC Lacrosse Division I - What Did We Learn this Weekend?

Thanks to the MISSISSIPPI team for hosting Auburn, LSU and South Carolina this past weekend at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. It had that SEC tone and feel. Playing the SELC tournament in an SEC or ACC stadium should be something that the SELC should look in to.

SELC Division I - NorthEast Division

East Carolina - Did Not Play

NC State - Beat Miami (Ohio) 12-0, Perennial MCLA Power Lindenwood 13-8 and GRLC Purdue 14-9

Virginia Tech -  Defeated 16th ranked Illinois 13-7 and Vanderbilt 15-12

Wake Forest - Beat SELC D2 Appalachian State 10-6

West Virginia - Did Not Play

NC State represented the SELC very well with a big win against Lindenwood. I liken it to beating the bully on the block. Lindenwood usually goes around beating-up on everyone. The WolfPack put them away with 5 goals in the 4th. Seems to me the WolfPack are the real deal and top 25 MCLA team. Virginia Tech surprised me by giving up 12 goals to Vandy, but handled highly ranked Illinois. Wake Forest seems to keep beating everyone by the same score. They just figure out a way to win and in the end, that is all that matters!

NC State versus Virginia Tech in Blacksburg Va. on Sunday April 3rd for the Division title. Either way, these two teams seem to have what it takes to do some damage in the SELC tournament. Should both be top 25 MCLA teams by then.

SELC Division I - NorthWest Division

Clemson -  Lost to FSU 19-12

Kentucky - Lost to Georgia Tech 7-5

South Carolina -  Beat Mississippi 16-3, LSU 16-1 and Auburn 15-1

Tennessee - Lost to FSU 17-9, beat Florida 7-6

Vanderbilt -  Lost to 16th ranked Illinois 12-7, beat Alabama 7-5, lost to Virginia Tech 15-12

Tennessee had the big victory, 7-6 over Florida in the Northwest division. Scored 3 goals in the 3rd to take the lead. Tight win against a defending SELC Champ Florida = contender.  Vanderbilt is one the the teams that has me intrigued. In their VT loss, they were leading the Hokies 6-5 at the half but gave up 10 goals in the second half. Can't wait to see them play. Clemson lost to FSU, but were only down 9-7 at the half, but they too gave up 10 goals in the 2nd half. Kentucky lost by 2 goals to GT.

I was in Oxford Mississippi where the South Carolina Gamecocks defeated it's opponents by a combined score of 47-5. I have to say that it wasn't the scoring that impressed me so much, (they can generate a lot of offense in a hurry) but how they played in all phases of the game, throughout the entire game. I'm not seeing many weaknesses in their "team" game. But you just don't know how a team will react close game situations. The 2nd half of there season will test them, but it has been all "A's" so far.

Clemson is still the class of this division. Tennessee and South Carolina are on the rise. Vanderbilt seems to be ready to take the next step, it's a shame that  they only have one division game left. Looks to me that this is the most competitive division in the SELC.

SELC Division I - SouthEast Division

Florida - Beat Georgia 9-8 and lost to Tennessee 7-6

Florida State - Defeated Tennessee 17-9 and Clemson 19-12

Central Florida - Beat Nebraska 30-8

Miami - Did not Play

South Florida -  Defeated Nebraska 13-9

Florida State with two big wins over Tennessee and Clemson certifies them as the team to beat in the SELC. Florida, I can't figure out the 1 goal Georgia win and 1 goal loss to Tennessee. Hangover from their Michigan trip? Still, its Florida State and Florida, as usual, at the top of this division. Central Florida can be a spoiler for Florida (UCF gets to play Florida at home) if they can defend better in the second half of the season.

SELC Division I - SouthEast Division

Alabama - Loses to Miami (Ohio) 17-10 and Vanderbilt 7-5

Auburn - Beat LSU 15-5, lost to South Carolina 15-1 and beat Mississippi 9-5

Georgia - Lost to Florida 9-8

Georgia Tech - Beat Kentucky 7-5

Mississippi - Defeated LSU 9-3, Loses to South Carolina 16-3 and Auburn 9-5

Alabama had a rough weekend after a terrific start to the season. Georgia almost took out Florida, but lost and is 0-5 so far this season. Are the Dawgs coming around? With 2 division loses, Mississippi appears to be the only Southeast Division team out  contention. At this point Alabama, Auburn, Georgia and Georgia Tech  all seem to have an opportunity to get a division championship.
