SELC Division I Power Rankings- Feb.23.2011 #CollegeLAX #MCLA #Lacrosse #SELC #LAX
Feb.23.2011
SELC Division I Power Rankings
Florida State is the #1 team in this weeks power ratings on the basis of their blow-out of Central Florida and the Gators (#2) 2 loses (MCLA Champ Michigan and Michigan State) on the road. Clemson , 3 more wins stays at #3 and Virginia Tech opened their season in expected fashion and remains at #4. NC State did not play but moves up to #5 by virtue of Central Florida's (dropped 7 places to #12) big loss to FSU (UCF losing 13-3 at the half). UCF defense appears(?) to be very suspect.
Miami dropped 7 slots from #6 to #13 even though they didn't play (I'm impatient!). Lets see what Miami has this weekend! Tennessee moves into the #6 spot with an overtime win over Vanderbilt, on the road. I think that is huge! South Carolina 2 blow-out wins is #7. Wake Forest is #8. Alabama (#9), 4-0 so far, scoring and playing defense, the Tide are rolling! Vanderbilt is #10, a tough OT loss to Tennessee and scoring 5 goals in the 4th to beat Kentucky.
Auburn (#11), Central Florida (#12), Miami (#13), Georgia Tech (#14) and Georgia (#15) 0-4 so far, round out the next 5.
West Virginia (#16) started there season on a long road-trip and got a victory over Mississippi. Kentucky moved from #20 to #17 by virtue of a 1 goal, come from ahead loss at Vanderbilt. East Carolina got their 1st win of the season, but it wasn't enough to keep them from moving down into the #20 slot.

SELC Lacrosse Division I - What Did We Learn this Weekend? - #CollegeLAX #MCLA #SELC #Lacrosse
Feb.21.2011
SELC Lacrosse Division I - What Did We Learn this Weekend?
SELC Division I - NorthEast Division
East Carolina - Got their 1st victory of the season 5-4 over SELC D2 Citadel.
NC State - Did not Play.
Virginia Tech - Opened season at home defeated GRLC Indiana 18-9.
Wake Forest - Defeated SELC D2 Elon 10-7, defeated GRLC Indiana 8-7.
West Virginia - Opening on the road, Beat Mississippi 7-6, loses to Georgia Tech 5-3 and South Carolina 17-6
VT opened their season with their usual efficiency, putting Indiana away with 7 goals in the 4th quarter.Wake Forest had a nice one goal win over Indiana. If Wake Forest can keep it close, they have the possibility to beat teams with their deliberate style of play. West Virginia went on a long road-trip, Morgantown to Atlanta and Columbia SC to start their season, going 1-2. A one goal win against Mississippi. Is it the opening week "O" blues or are the Mountaineers offensively (16 goals in 3 games will not get it done) challenged. Nice to see East Carolina get its first win of the season at the Citadel.
In the Northeast Division it is all about the Hokies. Wake Forest and the WolfPack can make it interesting.
SELC Division I - NorthWest Division
Clemson - Beat SELC D2 Wofford 18-2, SCAD 10-3, South Florida 15-8 all on the road.
Kentucky - Lost at home to division rival Vanderbilt 12-11.
South Carolina - Beat South Florida 24-5 in Savannah Ga, defeated West Virginia 17-6 at home
Tennessee - Beat division foe Vandbilt 9-8 in Nashville.
Vanderbilt - Had 2 division games, Lost to the Vols 9-8, beat Kentucky 12-11
Clemson keeps rolling along, 3 wins for the week. Tennessee beat Vanderbilt in OT in Nashville. in Knoxville Kentucky was beating Vanderbilt 10-7 going into the 4th quarter but gave up 5 goals and lost 12-11 at home to Vanderbilt. South Carolina continues to beat-up on their opponents scoring 66 goals while giving up 15 goals in 4 games this season. Waiting to see how the Gamecocks react to a tighter game scenario. South Carolina's division schedule doesn't start till March 20th.
Clemson still the class of NorthWest Division. Tennessee, Kentucky still have life with one division loss. South Carolina has everything in front of them. Vanderbilt is 1 goal away from a 2-1 record, but are 1-2 in the division. This division will get real interesting after the spring break.
SELC Division I - SouthEast Division
Florida - Lost to MCLA Champ Michigan 26-6 in Ann Arbor and lost to Michigan State 12-6.
Florida State - Beat Central Florida 22-14, Georgia 11-5, LSA SMU 13-5, all at home.
Central Florida - Lost to FSU 22-14, beat LSA SMU 21-7, beat Georgia 18-11
Miami - Did not Play.
South Florida - On the road, loses to Clemson 15-8 and South Carolina 24-5.
The big game was Florida's game in Ann Arbor to play MCLA Champ Michigan. That didn't work! But it was certainly worth the effort. Has to help the Gators down the line. Florida State took out Central Florida 22-14. FSU was up 13-3 at the half. As we suspected UCF can score but can't defend. "Defense wins championships", had to get some coach speak in! Maybe UCF will find some defense? Need to see more of Miami, they start playing again this weekend.
But it looks more like the "same old, same old" FSU @ Florida April 15th for division championship.
SELC Division I - SouthEast Division
Alabama - On the road defeated LSU 15-10, Baylor 13-4 and Tulane 17-3.
Auburn - Did not Play.
Georgia - Lost to FSU 11-5 and Central Florida 18-11 in Tallahassee.
Georgia Tech - Beat West Virginia 5-3 at home.
Mississippi - Lost to West Virginia 7-6 in Atlanta.
Alabama is 4-0 and appears to be the class of the division. They seem to be proving that they are for "real"! "But" will Auburn and Georgia start to play like they usually do. Georgia Tech and Mississippi seem to be offensive challenged. Seems as though this entire division has a problem with offense, with the exception of the Tide.
There is a window of opportunity here for Alabama!
I will get to see Mississippi and Auburn play this weekend in Oxford Mississippi.

SELC Division I Power Rankings
So we had some good games last weekend to help sort out the Power Rankings, ah... maybe they made it more confusing! Hey , but that is "ok", cause I going to rank'em anyway!
The big jumble is between #6-#17, not a real surprise to me! Maybe things are clearer to you, so let me know, email COCKSLAX.REPORT@GMAIL.COM, twitter @COCKSLAX_REPORT or on the blog at http://cockslaxreport.posterous.com/ .
The top 5, Florida, Florida State, Clemson, Virginia Tech, Central Florida, did not change and Miami moved to #6 (without playing, yes I know but...) with Wake Forest losing to South Carolina. SELC Lacrosse Division I - What Did We Learn this Weekend? #COLLEGELAX #MCLA #SELC -Feb.15.2011
Feb.15.2011
SELC Lacrosse Division I - What Did We Learn this Weekend?
SELC Division I - NorthEast Division
Virginia Tech and West Virginia open their season this coming weekend. We at least will know something about them next week.
NC State, Beat East Carolina 13-7, in a Division clash. Clearly NC State is on track early, could be competition to VT for division.
East Carolina, lost in overtime to TCU 10-9, nice comeback after an opening week at Clemson. Looks like Pirates are scoring, but having problems stopping people.
Wake Forest, lost at home to South Carolina 7-3, only scored one goal in the second half.
Is it a two horse race between VT and NC State? Can Wake Forest re-ignite their offense and get in the race? There has only been one division game, East Carolina @ NC State, so there is a long way to go. Only East Carolina appears to be out this early, but they do seem to be improving.
SELC Division I - NorthWest Division
Clemson, Beat Vanderbilt (Division game) and GRLC Kansas in Nashville Tenn.
Tennessee, Did not Play.
Vanderbilt, Lost to Clemson at home, beat Kansas
South Carolina, Beat Wake Forest 7-3 on the road and overpowered SELC DII Wofford.
Kentucky, Did not Play.
Clemson is 2-0 in the division already. Clearly the class of the division, maybe even the SELC. Tennessee plays Vanderbilt this weekend in what becomes a divisional "knock-out" game for the loser (loser would have 2 loses in division). Can the winner stay on track and be a factor in the division? South Carolina looked pretty good in their opener at Wake Forest and doesn't play their first divisional game until March 20. Can the Gamecocks continue to build until division play arrives? Kentucky, at least at this point, doesn't appear to have the horses. But we really don't know much about the Wildcats yet. Clemson and Vanderbilt showed well for the SELC by beating GRLC Kansas.
SELC Division I - SouthEast Division
Florida State and Miami, Did not Play.
Florida, Beat Palm Beach Atlantic (SELC D2).
Central Florida, Beat division opponent South Florida 17-4.
South Florida, see above...
Florida, has a huge game with Michigan this weekend. Obvious national implications, but what a spotlight game for the SELC. Would be a huge win for the Gators and SELC. Central Florida will have a say in the division championship. Knights offense appears to running on all cylinders and they have a close scrimmage (16-14 loss) with NCAA D2 Rollins. Tells me Central Florida is ready to play with Florida and FSU.
SELC Division I - SouthEast Division
Alabama, Beat Georgia Tech 7-5.
Georgia, Lost to Ohio U 9-5 at home.
Mississippi, lost 4-3 to GT.
Auburn, Beat Ohio U 13-12.
Georgia Tech, split 2 divisional games beating Mississippi 4-3, losing to Alabama 7-5.
I did not see the Georgia loss to Ohio U coming in their home opener. Have to believe the Dawgs will rebound. Auburn defeated that same Ohio U team at home 13-12, rebounding from the previous weekends pounding by FSU. Tigers appear to be back on track. I thought Georgia Tech would come back from their roadtrip to Mississippi and Alabama with 2 division wins. Wrong! They almost came back with 2 losses! Alabama took down the Jackets 7-5 and GT squeaked by Mississippi 4-3. GT has scored 8 goals in the last 3 games. Is this just an GT offensive power outage? Huge win for Alabama as they vault to the top of the division (1-0)! A close divisional win is big for any team. Mississippi, a mystery team to me, but I will get to see them play South Carolina in a few weeks!

Games of Interest (at least for me) this Weekend in SELC D1
Friday Feb.11
South Carolina @ Wake Forest - Opener for the GAMECOCKS, Wake Forest had a solid road victory last weekend. I will be covering this game, sending out updates on my twitter @COCKSLAX_REPORT and to this blog.
Texas Christian @ NC State - Wolfpack opener, inter-conference clash, always interesting to see how conferences stack up against one another.
Ohio U @ Georgia - Home opener for the Dawgs.
Saturday Feb.12
Georgia Tech @ Mississippi - SELC Divisional game. Really interested in what the Rebel Black Bear has.
Clemson @ Vanderbilt - Division game. Win by Tigers puts them up 2-0 in division. A Vandy win scrambles the division and all teams are back in play.
Ohio U @ Auburn (Oxford Miss.) - Inter-conference game, Tigers need to get back on track after FSU pounding.
Kansas @ Vanderbilt - While we're in town, lets play 2 games! I would love to see more of this! Guys, it wasn't that long ago that you were playing tournaments, 3-4-5-6 games in a day! Why not play 2?
Sunday Feb.13
Georgia Tech @ Alabama - SELC Division game. Get a read on Tide. A road sweep by GT this weekend, sets the Yellow Jackets up very nicely (2-0) in their division. Weekend sweep is very possible for Yellow Jackets.
Kansas v Clemson (at Vanderbilt) - Interesting to see how GRLC Kansas Jayhawks matchup with SELC Tigers.
Ohio U @ Kentucky - Wildcats need to get back on their feet, get some confidence back.
Central Florida (UCF) @ South Florida (USF) - Division matchup, actually a real test for both teams in my eyes. I know UCF can score, not sure what USF can bring to the table. A barometer game.
East Carolina @ NC State - Division game, I expect a big WolfPack win, but lets see if ECU can recover. Quite a big task for ECU.
Palm Beach Atlantic @ Florida - SELC D2/D1 matchup. Very tough matchup for Sailfish, but this kind of competition will help them down the road.
Enjoy the games this weekend!

Gamecocks Lacrosse Report SELC Division I Power Rankings
I am basing my SELC Division I Power Rankings on what I know and learn from various sources. These rankings are all about the "here and now" and subject to radical swings. Yes there are some doctrines that I subscribe to, strength of schedule, goals against, comeback wins/loses, etc..., they will become self evident and I will apply them as I see fit.
Hey, if you have an opinion or some input, I am open to all the information I can get! So let the discussions begin! Join in and lets talk about this! Send me an email COCKSLAX_REPORT@gmail.com, twitter @COCKSLAX_REPORT or leave comments on this web site http://cockslaxreport.posterous.com/ .
1. Florida Gators - (Div 2-0, Overall 2-0, Last Week #2) Defending SELC Champions, 2-0 in their division.Gators start speaks for itself.
2. Florida State Seminoles - (0-0, 1-1, #1) Tough 1 goal loss toTexas, could be ranked "1A".
3 Clemson Tigers - (1-0, 2-0, #4) Two wins last week, only allowed 4 goals, Tigers Playing well early.
4. Virginia Tech Hokies (0-0, 0-0, #3) Did not Play, but always an SELC powerhouse.
5. Central Florida Knights - (0-0, 1-0, #6) Beat-up on SELC Division II foe North Florida 26-12.
6. Wake Forest Demon Deacons - (0-0, 1-0, #10) Strong win at Georgia Tech.
7. Miami Hurricanes - (0-1, 0-1, #13) Strong performance against the Gators. I would like to see these 'Canes play those Gators in April. Miami could be a wild card team in a tough Division.
8. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (0-0, 1-1, #8)
9. Tennessee Volunteers (0-1, 0-1, #5) Lost at Clemson.
10. Georgia Bull Dogs (0-0, 0-0, #7) Did not Play.

Feb.8.2011 SELC Lacrosse Division I - What Did We Learn This Week? #COLLEGELAX #MCLA #SELC
Maybe we should rename this to SELC - "What We DIDN'T Learn this Week"! Seven (NC State, Virginia Tech, West Virginia,South Carolina, Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi) SELC teams did not play in the last week.
Those GAMECOCKS were one of the casualties of the lousy weather in the Southeast, as their opener in Charleston SC with the College of Charleston was cancelled. Don't worry, true to form the GAMECOCKS game was cancelled right before I crossed over the South Carolina Border (about 500 miles into my trip) on Friday afternoon. But I did get to see my daughter for her 22nd birthday in Columbia SC, which is priceless! No, I did not stay for her birthday keg party on saturday night! Yes, I did help take the keg out of the SUV and into the ice bucket! Just trying to be a good parent!
Note to all SELC Club Team Presidents Coaches - Please don't schedule divisional games in the first weekend of the season. Teams need to grow. We want to see all teams playing division games when they are playing at their peak! That means meaningful division games in the end of March and beginning of April. Florida is 2-0 in division play already, way to early for that.
So, what did we learn in the SELC Division I this week!
Florida State - Seminoles lost their opener to Texas 12-11. The Noles scored 5 goals in the final period but couldn't get it to overtime. Must have been a great game to watch, especially the 4th period where a total of 9 goals were scored by both teams. They beat Auburn 19-3. Yes, they will be a force to deal with throughout the season.
Auburn - Got pounded by Florida State 19-3. Don't think we can take too much from this game about Auburn. FSU came back strong after a tough opening loss and this was the season opener for the Tigers.
Wake Forest - Wake Beat GT 12-5. Game was tied at the half but the Deacons out scored the Jackets 8-1 in the second half. Looks like a pretty good combination of "D" and "O" by Wake.
East Carolina - The Pirates were blasted by Clemson 16-1. Not the way you want to start you season, but Clemson is always a strong team. Clemson had 47 shots in that game.
Clemson - The Tigers beat Tennessee 10-3 and East Carolina 16-1. They are 1-0 in their Division. My impression, good coaching, disciplined players = very good team.
Kentucky - In their first MCLA game ever, the Wildcats (were in the NCLL in 2011) received a rude greeting by the University of Dayton losing 17-3. The Flyers recorded 53 shots in the game. Welcome to the MCLA and SELC Kentucky Wildcats.
Vanderbilt - The 'Dores lost to GT 11-6 despite out shooting the Jackets 46-32. Did the 'Dores hit a hot GT goalie, or were they not dialed in with their shooting?
Tennessee - The Tigers beat Tennessee 10-3 in bad weather and field conditions. Thought this would be a closer game but in bad field conditions bad things can happen, fast. And apparently that is what happened to the Vols in Clemson SC. Expect a bounce back by the Vols. But it is a tough opener/division lose.
Florida - Gators beat a pesky Miami squad and dispatched South Florida in two SELC South East Division games. They have a strangle hold on their division (2-0). Already!! To use a famous quote "They are who we thought they are", the defending SELC Champions ready to defend their title!
Miami - The Hurricanes lost, in what appears to be a closer then the score indicates , 14-9 to the Florida Gators. Seem to be a young and coming squad. Keep these Hurricanes on your radar.
Central Florida - Took out North Florida 26-12. Knights can score goals, no surprise. Saw them last year in Columbia SC against South Carolina, they had quite the offense.
South Florida - Beat North Florida 15-13. Allowed 54 shots in the victory. Florida handled the Bulls 16-4 in a divisional loss.
Georgia Tech - Beat Vanderbilt 11-6. Lost to Wake Forest 12-5. Just couldn't seem to get the offense going in the second half against Wake. I did watch some of the game on Georgia Techs Lacrosse USTREAM channel, check it out at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/georgiatechlacrosse great stuff!
What I learned this week - Game summaries are few and far between!

So what do these Lacrosse programs, Arcadia U., Baylor U., Drexel U, Neshaminy, North Carolina State and Pittsburgh Lacrosse have in common? #COLLEGELAX #MCLA

Really they don't have anything in common! OK, so I lied! I said just GAMECOCKS and SELC Lacrosse. For kicks and giggles I'll try to keep you up to date on programs of interest to me and folks around me.
Arcadia University - I just found out that Arcadia will start a NCAA D3 program starting 2012-13 academic year. I didn't really know that they had a club program, but they do, playing in the NCLL. Makes a lot of sense, there is a lot of good Lacrosse going on in the Philly area, they should have a good base to draw from. But I will never get over the school name change from BEAVER COLLEGE to ARCADIA! Glad my degree says BEAVER COLLEGE! They missed out on a goldmine of marketing and gear! Here is the D3 announcement in PHILLYLACROSSE.com http://phillylacrosse.com/2010/12/17/arcadia-university-adds-mens-lacrosse-as-varsity-sport-team-set-to-begin-in-2012-13/
Baylor Bears - Within reach of a speeding donut in the office, we have a Baylor graduate. Even though he doesn't know "boo" about LAX, I have adopted them. Last weekend BAYLOR beat RICE 10-9 in LSA league action. Don't look now but they are rated #4 in the LAXPOWER.com MCLA ratings. Hey, #4 is #4, even if is February 2nd. http://www.laxpower.com/update11/binmen/rating05.php
Drexel University - Another guy in the office that I can hit with a donut! He talks about how DREXEL won the CLUB PAINTBALL NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP last year! Who would have know! I do know they have a very good LAX program. A few years ago we went to the VIRGINIA/DREXEL game and we sat next to Paul Rabil's mom!
Neshaminy High School - Where my daughter and son graduated from high school. It is a "huge" Football school, and big in general, 800 students in the senior class alone.Daughter ran cross-country, indoor and spring track for 4 years. My Son was captain on the NESHAMINY REDSKINS Lacrosse squad that made in into the first PA state Lacrosse playoffs his senior year. They have an excellent coach, McDaniel University 2 time NCAA D3 All-American Defenseman Josh Hanlon. We will even check out what some of the Neshaminy LAX alumni are up to in college.
North Carolina State - Another guy in the office that I can hit with a donut, but it is a difficult throw!
University of Pittsburgh - My nephew is a PITT graduate and last year I had to rub it in when the GAMECOCKS beat PITT in Blacksburg Va. His cousin had 2 goals for the GAMECOCKS to make it even more painful for him!
I would love to hear about your SELC team, game reports or just to discuss SELC/MCLA Lacrosse. So shoot me an email at COCKSLAX.REPORT@gmail.com , on TWITTER @COCKSLAX_REPORT, or leave comments on my POSTEROUS site http://cockslaxreport.posterous.com/
Please forgive the lousy formatting... doing this on the fly and it will get better over time!
