SELC Lacrosse Division I - What Did We Learn this Weekend?

SELC Division I - NorthEast Division

Virginia Tech and West Virginia open their season this coming weekend. We at least will know something about them next week.

NC State, Beat East Carolina 13-7, in a Division clash. Clearly NC State is on track early, could be competition to VT for division.

East Carolina, lost in overtime to TCU 10-9, nice comeback after an opening week at Clemson. Looks like Pirates are scoring, but having problems stopping people.

Wake Forest, lost at home to South Carolina 7-3, only scored one goal in the second half.

Is it a two horse race between VT and NC State? Can Wake Forest re-ignite their offense and get in the race? There has only been one division game, East Carolina @ NC State, so there is a long way to go. Only East Carolina appears to be out this early, but they do seem to be improving.

SELC Division I - NorthWest Division

Clemson, Beat Vanderbilt (Division game)  and GRLC Kansas in Nashville Tenn.

Tennessee, Did not Play.

Vanderbilt, Lost to Clemson at home, beat Kansas

South Carolina, Beat Wake Forest 7-3 on the road and overpowered SELC DII Wofford.

Kentucky, Did not Play.

Clemson is 2-0 in the division already. Clearly the class of the division, maybe even the SELC. Tennessee plays Vanderbilt this weekend in what becomes a divisional "knock-out" game for the loser (loser would have 2 loses in division). Can the winner stay on track and be a factor in the division? South Carolina looked pretty good in their opener at Wake Forest and doesn't play their first divisional game until March 20. Can the Gamecocks continue to build until division play arrives? Kentucky, at least at this point, doesn't appear to have the horses. But we really don't know much about the Wildcats yet. Clemson and Vanderbilt showed well for the SELC by beating GRLC Kansas.

SELC Division I - SouthEast Division

Florida State and Miami, Did not Play.

Florida, Beat Palm Beach Atlantic (SELC D2).

Central Florida, Beat division opponent South Florida 17-4.

South Florida, see above...

Florida, has a huge game with Michigan this weekend. Obvious national implications, but what a spotlight game for the SELC. Would be a huge win for the Gators and SELCCentral Florida will have a say in the division championship. Knights offense appears to running on all cylinders and they have a close scrimmage (16-14 loss) with NCAA D2 Rollins. Tells me Central Florida is ready to play with Florida and FSU.

SELC Division I - SouthEast Division

Alabama, Beat Georgia Tech 7-5.

Georgia, Lost to Ohio U 9-5 at home.

Mississippi, lost 4-3 to GT.

Auburn, Beat Ohio U 13-12.

Georgia Tech, split 2 divisional games beating Mississippi 4-3, losing to Alabama 7-5.

I did not see the Georgia loss to Ohio U coming in their home opener. Have to believe the Dawgs will rebound. Auburn defeated that same Ohio U team at home 13-12, rebounding from the previous weekends pounding by FSU. Tigers appear to be back on track. I thought Georgia Tech would come back from their roadtrip to Mississippi and Alabama with 2 division wins. Wrong! They almost came back with 2 losses! Alabama took down the Jackets 7-5 and GT squeaked by Mississippi 4-3. GT has scored 8 goals in the last 3 games. Is this just an GT offensive power outage? Huge win for Alabama as they vault to the top of the division (1-0)! A close divisional win is big for any team. Mississippi, a mystery team to me, but I will get to see them play South Carolina in a few weeks!
